BESTSELLERS - The UK Garden Centre Charts

Weekending Sunday 20/06/2010

Lights, Action, Grow

As the warm weather encourages customers to spend more time in the garden so the sales of feed products soar, as do sales of support products and decorative lighting.

Scotts Tomorite 1 litre continues to lead the field, now the No 1 garden product for 10 successive weeks. Miracle-Gro All-Purpose Soluble plant food 1kg is the leading general purpose feed at No 4 with volume sales up 21% on last week. Orchid drip feeders are also on the move back up the chart. Fito’s Orchid drip feeder climbs 8 places to No 7 and the Growing Success feeder is the weeks highest climber, up 19 places to No 19.

With all of that growing going on, supporting products are selling well too. Gardman Gard Stakes 90 cm and 120 cm both saw big sales increases to reach No’s 21 and 22 in the Top 50.

Decorative lighting is the other success story this week. The re-entry of Gardman’s Bottle Candle lantern, straight back in at No 2 highlights the trend towards outdoor lighting using candles this season as has been reported by garden centre staff during our Greatest Awards judging visits.

Lawncare products are still selling well. Last year we didn’t see any lawn care products in the chart after the end of May and this year we have Patch Magic in the Top 10 and 2 Aftercut packs at No 36 and No 37.

The end of June is also clearly the time for gardeners to buy garden twine. This week last year Gardman 100 gram Jute twine entered the chart at No 50. This year they’ve been buying a bigger ball – 250 grams and sales have Gardman Jute Twine 250 grams new in at No 44.

Bark product sales volumes rose by 22% last week while the overall Top 50 bestsellers growing media sales volumes dropped by 8%. Westland’s Decorative Mini Bark 80 litres is the highest chart climber, up 14 places to No 12, just behind 100 litre bags of Landscape Bark, up 11 places to No 11.

Highest new growing media chart entry is Scotts Levington 56 litre multi purpose compost at No 33 with Westland’s Peat Based Multi purpose Compost 75 litres re-enters at No 40.
